Designating an Academic Advisor

The academic advisor will help you select courses, develop a research project, and understand Department and University requirements. The Department of Animal Sciences requires you to choose a faculty advisor and notify the Graduate Program Office, 436 Animal Sciences Laboratory, of your choice.

While the majority of students have selected an academic advisor prior to enrollment in the Department of Animal Sciences, you must designate an academic advisor before you enroll for your second semester of graduate study. Advisor selection forms are available in 436 Animal Sciences Laboratory. The forms are to be signed by you and your advisor and returned to the Graduate Program Office. Your registration for subsequent semesters may be encumbered if you fail to meet this requirement.

You may change academic advisors at any time. To have the change officially recognized, file a new advisor selection form in the Graduate Program Office.

In addition to your academic advisor, you may consult with and seek advice from any member of the faculty. Students often consult with several faculty members, especially the members of committees selected by the student and the academic advisor to oversee thesis or dissertation projects. These committees are described in the sections on degree requirements and procedures.
